> Mobilisation in Iran: social science input / 14.10.2022

EHESS is bringing together a number of Iran specialists to analyse the current Iranian mobilisation through the prism of the social sciences, at a videoconference hosted by Emmanuel Laurentin (France Culture), on Friday 14 October 2022.

How can the extraordinary Iranian mobilisation be analysed from Europe? What information is available to analyse the actions of the revolt? From what distance can we express our solidarity and concern? In addition to the powerful feminist dimension that is shaping the revolt today, what place does the Kurdish question have in it, or that of the young students who, alongside so many others, are risking their lives today?

Researchers specialising in these issues will shed light from the social sciences on a movement that needs to be understood at different levels, in the time and space of Iran. A perspective from a distance, but one that does not exclude commitment or proximity.

The round table is moderated by Emmanuel Laurentin, historian and producer of the programme ‘Le Temps du débat’ on France Culture.

> Uprising in Iran: the current situation / 18.11.2022

Since 16 September 2022, the streets of Iranian cities have once again been the scene of demonstrations of anger and indignation. It was young women and men aged 12-24 who sparked off this protest movement, the first of its kind in the history of the Islamic Republic of Iran. A movement which, with its main slogan ‘Woman, Life, Freedom’, continues to gain momentum. A slogan that carries no ideology, and calls for unity regardless of gender, generation, language, religion, social class or ethnicity. How can we analyse the originality of this uprising? How can we explain the courage and determination of these young people who, at the risk of their lives, have opted for frontal opposition to the theocratic regime?

The aim of this round table is to provide some answers to these questions with :

Hamit Bozarslan (Cetobac)
Stéphane A. Dudoignon (GSRL)
Marie Ladier-Fouladi (Cetobac)
Chowra Makaremi (Iris)

> Popular uprising and governance crisis in Iran:

Sept. 2022-March 2023 / 16.03.2022

Six months after the outbreak of the ‘Women, Life, Liberty’ revolt, the mobilisations seem to be slowing down. But this does not mean a return to normality. The tension is still palpable, and a spark could ignite the whole thing at any moment.

The changes that have taken place over the last six months have produced new social, cultural and political actors whose role will be decisive in the continuation and direction of the ‘Women, Life, Freedom’ revolt. The aim of this round table, devoted to the popular uprising in Iran, is to analyse these dynamics at work, with the participation of :

Hamit Bozarslan (Cetobac)
Stéphane A. Dudoignon (GSRL)
Marie Ladier-Fouladi (Cetobac)
Chowra Makaremi (Iris)
